Voici mon secret. Il est très simple: on ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.
“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
“이제 비밀을 알려줄게. 아주 간단해. 그건 오직 마음으로만 바로 볼 수 있다는 거야. 중요한 것은 눈에 보이지 않아.” 162-163쪽
"The stars are beautiful, because of a flower that cannot be seen."
I replied, "Yes, that is so." And, without saying anything more, I looked across the ridges of sand that were stretched out before us in the moonlight.
"The desert is beautiful," the little prince added.
And that was true. I have always loved the desert. One sits down on a desert sand dune, sees nothing, hears nothing. Yet through the silence something throbs, and gleams…
"What makes the desert beautiful," said the little prince, "is that somewhere it hides a well…“

Et c'était vrai. J'ai toujours aimé le désert. On s'assoit sur une dune de sable. On ne voit rien. On n'entend rien. Et cependant quelque chose rayonne en silence...
-Ce qui embellit le désert, dit le petit prince, c'est qu'il cache un puits quelque part...

지은이 앙투안 드 생텍쥐페리 (Antoine De Saint-Exupéry)
1900년 프랑스 리옹에서 출생한 프랑스의 유명한 소설가. 공군에서 비행기 조종사, 항공사에서 항공우편 담당 등 여러 직업을 전전했다. 제2차 세계대전이 일어나자 다시 종군해, 1944년 7월 코르시카 해상에서 정찰 비행을 하던 중 행방불명되었다. 조종사로 일하면서 틈틈이 글을 써 발표했는데, 특히 죽음의 위험을 극복하려는 조종사들의 의지, 인간의 존엄성을 보여 주는 용기, 삶에 대한 깊은 통찰력을 담은 《야간 비행》으로 페미나상을 받으며 작가로서 인정받고 성공한다.
《어린왕자》는 저자가 미국에서 망명 중이던 1943년, 뉴욕에서 영어판과 프랑스어판으로 동시 출간되었고, 현재 160여개 언어로 번역되어 전 세계 수많은 독자들의 사랑을 받고 있다. 다른 별에서 온 어린왕자라는 순수한 영혼을 통해, 가장 중요한 것은 마음으로 보아야 한다, 길들인 것에 대해 책임을 져야 한다는 내용을 전하며 순수한 우정과 인간애를 그렸다. 더 나아가 삶의 의미와 가치, 진실을 생각하게 하며, 작가가 직접 그린 삽화들이 시정(詩情)과 아름다움을 더해 준다.
